Musca autumnalis Face Fly
MUSCA AUTUMNALIS
Eggs are laid singularly on surface of dung, not dung inside buildings.
Minimum development is 7 days, the larvae leave the dung and pupate in surrounding soil.
Adults emerge from puparium in the morning.
Adults feed on facial secretions-tears, nasal mucus, saliva, blood from wounds.
These flies transmit PINKEYE bovine keratoconjunctivitus, also eyeworm.
Fly numbers can be reduced by sanitaion, thus reducing breeding places.
Stacking manure in heaps causes it to ferment, high internal temperatures will kill fly larvae and eggs.
Topical applications of insecticides- permethrin, Dimilin sprayed onto manure heaps.
Pyrethroids used in ear tags, spot-ons, pour-ons and dust bags can all be used for control.
Methoprene- this inhibits eclosion of adults for up to 7 months.
Subcutaneous injections of ivermectin, 1mcg/kg orally and less than 2.5mcg/kg subcutaneously gives 95%-100% control of immature face flies.
